What is gold-filled?
Gold-filled is a type of metal that is made by bonding a layer of gold to a base metal core. The process involves applying heat and pressure to fuse a layer of gold to the base metal, creating a durable and long-lasting material that has the appearance of solid gold at a more affordable price point.
Gold-filled jewelry typically has a thicker layer of gold than gold-plated jewelry, which makes it more durable and resistant to tarnishing. In the United States, for jewelry to be labeled as "gold-filled," it must have a gold layer that is at least 5% of the total weight of the item.
What is the difference between gold-filled/goldfield and gold-plated jewelry?
For gold-plated jewelry, a gold alloy is layered over a base metal. Gold-filled jewelry contains 100x more gold alloy than gold-plated jewelry. This is because the coating is thicker, gold-filled jewelry will last longer and resist wear and tear better than gold-plated. In addition, it would only take one tiny scratch to expose the brass beneath a piece of gold-plated jewelry.
Because gold filled jewelry is made with solid gold sheets the base metal will not come in contact with the skin. This makes it a safe metal for people with sensitive skin. On the other hand, gold plated jewelry has such a tiny, almost not existent layer of gold that base metal comes in contact with the skin and often causes irritation.
What is the difference between gold-filled and goldfield jewelry?
While the manufacture of gold-filled is based on a mechanical procedure in which heat and pressure are used to wrap and fix a gold leaf to a brass or copper core, the application of goldfield consists of an electrical or chemical process to deposit a layer of gold on the base metal.
How long does Gold-filled and Goldfield last?
By following the basic care instructions for this type of piece, you can preserve its original appearance for several years. However, other factors, such as the pH of your skin, directly affect its duration. In general, the thicker the gold layer, the longer the gold layer will last, so a conventional gold plating will last less than that gold-filled and goldfield because of their higher percentage of gold.
It's important to note that gold-filled/goldfield jewelry is not the same as solid gold and its value will depend on the amount of gold used and the current market price of gold. However, it is a more affordable alternative to solid gold that still has the look and durability of the precious metal.
